Galerie Studer is delighted to host the first solo exhibition of Zemba Luzamba in Côte d'Ivoire, featuring a new body of never-seen-before paintings to allow all the finest contemporary art lovers to discover one of the most talented figures of the African art scene.
Born in 1973 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zemba Luzamba was introduced to art at an early age in his hometown of Lubumbashi. After studying in Lusaka, Zambia, the young artist decided not to return to his country of origin because of the climate of political instability there and decided to settle in South Africa where he had been living since 2000.
Since then, becoming the chronicler of his personal experience of migration, through his works, the artist questions the social and political structures of power in Africa and gives us an intimate vision of the migrant communities in which he has drawn inspiration over the past 15 years.
Contemporary realist, the singularity of Zemba Luzamba’s work lies in its strong narrative dimension, offering a unique insight into everyday scenes. But if the works of the Congolese painter intrigue us and raise questions in us, it is also because this almost naturalistic quest is nuanced by a lack of specificity of the context in which the ordinary subjects that populate his paintings evolve.
